Upper Dolpo shelters about 5.000 people, whose lives revolve around Buddhism, barley, and yaks; their villages (over 4.260 meters) are among the highest settlements on earth. A large portion of Dolpo has been set aside as Shey – Phoksumdo National Park, at 3.555 square km Nepal’s largest. Meant to preserve a complete example of the trans-Himalayan ecosystem, the park shelters blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, leopards, wolves, and the exclusive snow leopard.Dolpo is the best-known of Nepal’s forbidden northern border regions. The 1989 announcement that the government was opening the region to group treks caused a flurry of excitement. To reach here, you must trek through a registered company, which will obtain permits. Groups generally fly from Nepalgunj to the Juphal airstrip, then walk few hours to the district headquarters of Dunai (2,100 meters). The trail follows the Suli Gad River, passing through thick conifer forests and a few Thakuri Hindu villages. The National Park check-post is one day from Dunai; two steep days later, you reach Phoksumdo Lake.

It is remote and unknown from the western view point because of its distance from the kathmandu.reguler flight to Dolpo airstrips in the west reduce this remoteness somewhat. But they add considerably to the cost of trekking. The trails go along river valleys to the shey phoksundo lake, shey Gompa, many passes and Do-Trap via Saldang Pass, Sangda Pass (5490m) to Jomsom.Dolpo is situated in the Shey–Phoksumdo National Park separated from the rest of Nepal by the Dhaulagiri massif this is truly an isolated corner of Nepal and bordering the Tibetan Plateau. To get there requires linking bus and air flights together as well as strenuous trekking in very remote areas and at altitude. In this region you can find a well-preserved eco-system of plants and wildlife, including the blue sheep and the elusive snow leopard. The view of Kanjiroba peak, Phoksumdo Lake, and the Dhauligiri massif is one of the most rewarding moments of this trek. A visit to the Phoksumdo Gompa – dedicated to the ancient Bonpo religion, local to Dolpo and Tibet, is a memorable experience.
